Sleep vs. Huge Smile

My little one has a habit of getting up one or two hours before he's supposed to in the morning but usually wins me over with his gorgeous (I'm up) smile. Do your kids do this too...or just mine?

Baby's First Christmas

It's baby's first christmas this year and mum just realised she has to make a santa sack. Okay, so it's more about wanting to than has to. I did a bit of research for santa sacks online but didn't really find anything that I liked enough to purchase. I also found them to be a little on the smaller side.

I did come across this one in Target yesterday, which I thought was pretty good but I opted to make my own in the end. On this Target version, you can move the tick to different check boxes. Each box has a velcro dot.

Spotlight had some cute fabric, so that's where I went for materials. I will post the end result once I find the time to complete it.

Fill 'Er Up!

Until last week, I was one of those mothers who had an instant dislike for anyone who told me that their child was sleeping through the night...especially if their child was younger than my own. Once again, I found myself questioning what I was doing wrong and why I was the one up feeding every 2 hours when these other mothers got to sleep. After discussion with my mother's group, I found the solution - tank feeding!

Image from babycentre.com

Now you may ask what tank feeding is - I certainly did. It is when you feed your child often over a short period of time to tank them up. This is more commonly known as cluster feeding. To ensure a harmonious night's sleep for all, I now feed on the hour for three hours in a row, commencing at 5:30pm. The last feed is the longest one and has my little one drifting off soon after. It may have taken a few days to kick in and work into our daily routine but I'm happy to state it really works. I am now one of three mothers in my mother's group who uses this technique.

Here's to tanking up!

Finding Calm Amongst the Chaos

When I imagined motherhood, I never thought it would be a walk in the park but I never thought it would be this challenging either.

 Image sourced from RISA

Last week we found out our 5 week old baby has reflux or GORD. This explains such a lot and why we feel like we've had a more difficult time lately than other first-time parents we know. I really wish our antenatal classes had gone over reflux, so we weren't left so in the dark about it. Some of the symptoms he's displaying include:

- throwing up after feeding
- arching his back when being burped or generally in pain
- having clenched fists most of the time
- not being able to settle during the day
- screaming as soon as he's put on his back
- falling asleep in the bouncer or baby bjorn (anything vertical)
- needing to be held
- not gaining weight at the rate he should be (still not back up to birth weight)
- hiccups
- wanting to feed all the time, as the milk is soothing

Our little one has been put on losec twice a day but it only seems to give him brief periods of relief. I wish the relief was longer for both him and us. I feel like I can't even get one task done before he'll crack it. I started this post for instance last night and am only trying to finish it now, while he's sleeping.

Unfortunately it seems most people just have to wait out the reflux, which on average ends around the age of 6 months. I also didn't realise how common it is, with up to 1 in every 5 babies or 34,000 babies affected each year (http://www.reflux.org.au/kids-reflux-the-facts-and-the-stats/). The severity of it differs in each child. The reflux organisation also states that infant sleep problems are associated with post natal depression and I must admit in the first few weeks, I felt quite emotional and would cry for no apparent reason. I think it largely stemmed to not being able to settle my child and his screaming. I thought I was just a bad parent and had no idea what I was doing wrong. Thankfully there was a reason and I am glad I found out now and not later on.

If you are a new mother and experiencing any of the above symptoms in your child, do yourself a favour and get your child looked over by your local GP or paediatrician. Remember you are not alone, there are other mothers going through this and there are organisations out there to help such as RISA.

From the Mother of a Newborn

I don't think you ever realise how hard it's going to be as a first time mother, until you're in that position for yourself. It was good to hear from a friend yesterday, who has just had her first child too and hear that she too was having some difficulties - I'm not alone. I now feel a bit guilty that I didn't do more for my friends when they had their first children.

For me, it's not so much the lack of social outings (due to bub not having had his 8 week shots yet) but the lack of sleep. I don't think I realised how much I took sleep for granted, until the opportunity for sleep was gone. Thankfully bub has now got into a nighttime rhythm of having a feed and change at 12pm, 3 or 4am and 7am. It was also nice to see that another girl I know on Facebook last night at 4am, probably also nursing a screaming baby to sleep.

I subscribe to newsletters from the website Essential Baby and read through their latest newsletter yesterday. I came across this beautiful poem and it gave me inspiration and motivation, so I thought I'd share it with you.

A Poem to end the 'Mummy Wars' by Kim Simon

It’s 10 pm in my house, and the kids are both asleep.
The tiny one is swaddled, and finally breathing deep.
My four year old is tucked in tight, his blanket on his head.
I’m typing away by the glow of the screen,
though my body is pleading for bed.
You see it’s almost midnight, and that’s when the games begin.
My baby wakes up starving to death, and smiles his gummy grin.
I whip out my boob before he can scream, and he curls up on to my chest.
I close my eyes and start to drift …
I rarely remember the rest.
But one thing’s for sure in the dead of the night, when I’m nursing by the light of my phone.

I stare out the window and imagine you’re there,
and I know that I’m never alone.
So this is your personal invite, to the party that I throw in my head.
It’s nice to think that there’s mamas like me, and that no one is comfy in bed.
See, when my baby spits up and it lands in my bra, I know that yours just did the same.
You might be in Utah or Kalamazoo, and I’ll never discover your name.
But you’re out there like me, with your babe in your arms,
and you pray that he won’t make a sound.
When you get up to transfer him back to the crib,
and his binkie falls onto the ground.
His wail fills the air and you let out a curse,
yet Daddy still snores like a train.
Mums can get by on just 3 hours sleep,
but The Daddy will always complain.
There are millions of mamas like me and like you,
who are doing the night-feeding dance.
Every three hours we cuddle our babes,
even as they blow-out their pants.
There’s a dance that we do, all the mamas and I,
a dance that’s known only to us.
It’s a sway to the left and a bounce to the right,
when the baby is starting to fuss.
It’s a pace down the hall and a rock in the chair,
a song whispered ever so slow.
We share the same rituals and bedtime routines,
so I think that you already know …
that it really won’t matter if you bottle it up
or if milk sprays right out of your chest.
We’re all feeding babies with love in our hearts,
while praying for a little more rest.
So pull out your boobies or measure your scoops,
relax in your comfiest chair.
When you’re fed up and flustered or just tired and mad,
look outside and you’ll know that we’re there.
You can find us on Facebook when we comment on posts,
we put pictures on IG and Twitter.
When the baby’s still up and won’t settle back down,
we’ve been known to search Etsy for “glitter”.
The books like to say that the magic will come
at 6 months or 9 months for most.
But until then we’ll search for tired mummies like us,
who leave comments on Huffington Post.
There’s strength in our numbers,
the Mums of The Night
We’re weary, we’re hungry, we’re up ’till it’s light.
We’re hardcore, we’re shopping, we’re living the dream.
We’re slipping, we’re fading, we’re ready to scream.
We’re drowning in onesies and burp rags and toys.
We’re loving the heck out of our girls and boys.
But mamas get tired and pushed to the brink,
we leave laundry unfolded and dishes  in the sink.
So cut us some slack if we still lose our sh*t,
we’re warriors, we’re troopers, and we’ve vowed not to quit.
This feeding thing’s hard though we’re doing it well
with nipple shields, pumps, and some lanolin gel.
We use formula, breastmilk, bottles and pads,
we’ll do anything possible to nourish our lads.
We’re the same in the long run, no fighting allowed.
We’re all doing our best, we deserve to feel proud.
Now it’s almost that time when my oldest wakes up.
He needs water, a hug, “No, that’s not the right cup!”
And as soon as he’s snuggled right back in his bed,
the baby wakes up ’cause he needs to be fed.
So I’m off to the trenches but I’ll see you real soon,
remember us mamas all share the same moon.
So swaddle your babies and then raise your glasses,
let’s cheers to the motherhood kicking our asses.

Sleep...what is that?

My beautiful little boy was born on the 17th July at 8:09pm, weighing 3.86kg (8lbs 8ozs). It was an induced labour of 13 hours but I would go through it all again to get my precious little boy. As people have told me in the past, it's one day out of your life or much less if you have a quick, swift delivery.  Here's a cute picture of our little boy's feet, from a photoshoot last week. We are currently quite sleep deprived but still very much in love.

My little man was determined to be stubborn (like his parents) and wouldn't even say when a hot curry or raspberry loose leaf tea was consumed. My birth plan was always to go with the flow but avoid pethadine.

For those interested, this is the birth story:
  • I was admitted into hospital on the 16th July at 9pm and had prostaglandin gel inserted to get things moving. Unfortunately this did nothing for me and with no beds available in the maternity wing that evening, my husband and I slept in the labour ward, which wasn't very comfortable
  • At 7am, my obstetrician visited and broke my waters. I was then put on oxytocin to get my labour progressing even faster
  • Within 1.5 hours I was trying the exercises from my antenatal class and using fitness balls and massage techniques
  • By mid morning the pain was more intense and I opted to try the gas
  • My obstetrician came back to check on me at lunch and I was still only 4cms dialated, at which time he suggested an epidural and I readily accepted. With contractions 1 minute apart, I was in quite a bit of pain at this stage. The worst bit about this was waiting for the anaesthesist and keeping still while having contractions
  • The epidural was a godsend but it did slow my labour right down...by about 5 hours
  • When it came time to pushing, it was difficult, as I couldn't feel my lower half. However, I still managed to do so. Bub started having fetal distress because he was coming down on an angle, so I had to have an episiotomy during the 2nd phase of labour
  • Bub had to have a little oxygen when he came out but fed straight away and knew what to do there
  • Daddy did get to cut the umbilical cord and if you're wondering what that feels like, I was told tough calamari
  • Everything else went fine, including winning the State of Origin that evening :).
My hospital, husband, doctors and most midwives were fantastic on the day and made the hardship of labour just that bit easier.

Will the Duchess beat me to it?

Today is the 2nd July, which means bub is due in 9 days. I am now off work and on the countdown. I'm a mix of excitement and nerves but very much looking forward to meeting my little boy. My 2 yr old Labrador is enjoying cuddles with him too at the moment.

The kitchen is now also functioning as a kitchen...just in time. I'm quite happy with the results but now must do the nesting thing to get the place cleaner. As you can see, the floor needs sanding and we have to knock out the old kitchen, which sits next to the new one.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar Baby Shower

Last weekend my sister held a baby shower for bub and I was quite overwhelmed by the love and generousity shown to myself and family-to-be.

My sister had remembered that I loved the very hungry caterpillar story and themed the entire party around this. As you can see from the photos below, the decorations speak for themselves.

Note the onesies on a line in the background

The cake took pride of place

My wonderful mum had taken the time to make this nappy cake. I think I will
definitely have to try this for friends in future - what a great idea!

A mobile for above the cot

My Bubba Blue cot, sheet set arrived this week and it's finally meant to be sunny in Brisbane this weekend, so I can't wait to wash everything and finally dress the cot. I just heard what I wrote and I think I have officially developed the nesting syndrome!

Where did my feet go?

On the way to work this morning, I realised I couldn't really see my feet for my stomach. Not surprising really with just over 6 weeks to go.

The kitchen is also getting there. Here's an image for those of you who actually read my blog. As you can see, both sides now have carcasses and the splash back stud work is done. The electrician has also roughed in. The benchtop is being ordered this week and we will start to work on the drawers this coming weekend probably. The painting is just about done too. I'm very thankful I still have a working kitchen (as you can see in the background), while the new one is being built. The bench behind the splash back is probably being demolished very soon.

Wish I could crochet

Darling husband's grandma is known as one of the best crochet ladies in her town. We were feeling a little spoilt yesterday when these were sent up for bub. How adorable are they?

A Weekend of Birthdays

Last weekend was definitely a weekend for birthdays, despite the rain and the little bit of renovating we got done. I celebrated my 20 something birthday and a friend celebrated her 30th birthday on the Saturday and then my mum celebrated her 60th birthday with family on Sunday night. I was indeed spoilt by family and friends between receiving maternity clothes, Tupperware, money and cabin bags for travel. I also managed to purchase the mattress I had been wanting for my Boori cot.

The cot is finally set up

I went out with my immediate family Saturday night to celebrate and really should have booked somewhere but we were happy to stumble upon the Craft Restaurant and Bar, who thankfully weren't booked out. The Craft Restaurant and Bar is located on the corner of Park Rd. and Railway Tce., Milton and whilst it may appear as if it's just your ordinary pub from the street, it is much more on the inside. The food was also amazing. I had this delicious pasta and pork belly meal for dinner and a Rhubarb Tarte Tatin for dessert. This place was a real find!

mmm pasta with Pork Belly

Sunday night was a planned surprise event for my mum that was to include all the family but unfortunately some of the family members had to cancel that afternoon, due to the birth of my cousin's little girl that day. So it was happy tidings but unfortunate timing. Nonetheless, we still had 10 people in attendance to the Mud Dessert Bar in Bulimba, on Oxford Street. Their desserts were to die for and hats off to the chef. My dessert was definitely in my top 10 list. Here's just a couple of their desserts that were on our table...

 Death Row
(amazingly everyone got through their dessert)
 Rocky Road Sundae
   Ferrero
(complete with hazelnut floss)

A surprise party wouldn't be complete without a few balloons, so I'd like to thank Spartys (at Spotlight) for putting these together for me.

I came across this today, something funny for your Friday. It's an Ode to Sleep Deprived Parents, as  performed by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

Baby Room Done and Dusted

After finishing the master bedroom last weekend, this weekend was devoted to getting the baby's room done and moving the study to the old bedroom space. This involved a trip to IKEA, a trip to Baby Bunting, darling husband moving furniture and lots of allen keys. The end result was a constructed cot, change table and chest of drawers, in addition to putting together two new study chairs and a desk. The study is still a work in progress but here's some photos of the baby's room. All that's missing are some paintings and blinds.

Very happy with the end result

Already spoilt with choice thanks to rellies and friends

Love and Loss

My blog post today is short and sweet and dedicated to a loved one, who shall remain unknown.

Miscarriage is a topic that often gets swept under the rug but is so important to talk about. Please talk to those experiencing it and let them know that you're there for them, even weeks later. Grief and heartbreak is never something that should be experienced alone. To my someone special, please know that I am thinking of you and will leave you with this poem (which I think is beautiful, even if you never get a chance to read it):

'The world may never notice if a flower doesn't bloom or even pause to wonder why petals fall too soon but every life that ever forms or ever comes to be, will touch this world in some small way for all eternity.'

Wedding Guest Dilemma

Earlier this week, I got a beautiful wedding invitation from a friend I've known since high school days. His wedding is to be in Sydney this coming April. I was so excited to receive the invitation, until I realised the dress code said formal attire. Normally, I would love an occasion to dress up in formal attire but things suddenly seem a lot more difficult now that I'm pregnant and have to find a formal dress.

Ideally I'd love to wear a dress that flows, maybe something the below but where do I find this at a reasonable price in Australia?

 Source: http://www.fashionlande.com

Admittedly I did find this dress from www.maternityrevolution.com.au but it's not quite what I'm after. It definitely doesn't need to be in the colours shown on this page. Suggestions of dress store locations are most welcome at this point

Big Nursery Decisions

For all the first time mothers-to-be out there, you will find some of the biggest ticket items you will have to purchase are associated with the nursery. I have been lucky enough to obtain a hand-me-down rocking chair and stool from my sister-in-law but still have to worry about items such as the cot and changetable. Whilst you would think such items are an easy choice and you can purchase them anywhere, think again. You should really be thinking about the safety of your child, the functionality of these items and them adhering to Australian standards, which I personally consider important (and my friend who works in risk management would be happy to hear about).

My cousin had her baby shower last weekend and let others know that she had bought a Boori cot. Before this point, I hadn't even looked into cots and had no idea about things such as teething rails for cots! With much to learn, I headed to the Choice website, a website regarding Australian standards for cots and product review websites. The one cot that kept coming up in the top 5 was the Boori. So after much review, I too have chosen to purchase a Boori Cot and Changetable. I am not going to bother with the Bassinet, as I have already purchased a Bassinet cot insert from a friend to use for the first couple of weeks. The Cot and Changetable are big purchase decisions (we are lucky to have family members putting money towards them) and not cheap but I think it's worth it, especially considering we are planning to have another child down the track. Here's the cot and changetable we are going to purchase (once again I apologise to those reading this blog and thinking oh great, another baby story):

Gender Reveal Cupcakes

I am seeing my side of the family tonight and wanted a cheeky way of revealing the gender of the baby to them, without it being obvious from word go...so I baked cupcakes! I may have stolen the idea from this great blog article - http://prettyhungrygirl.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/a-very-revealing-dessert/ The only difference is her cupcakes look a lot prettier because I am still to master this icing thing. I think I'm going to try using cream cheese next time.

The idea is for family members to choose a pink or blue baby shower favour and stick it in their cupcake and then cut through the cupcake to see if they're right or not. It's really just a bit of fun for a Friday night.

Here's the before shot...

I had to laugh this morning because hubby thought I'd just baked a pile of regular cupcakes and didn't understand why they were getting yellow cupcakes. Little did he know that there was a surprise inside.

The second and third batch for extended family and coworkers definitely worked better, don't you think?

Girl or Boy?

Today officially marks the 1/2 way point of my pregnancy and probably the point where I start to freak out a bit more. I had my 20 week scan today and am happy to report that the baby is healthy and everything is where it should be. Hubby and I also found out the gender of the baby (because we wanted to know) but before I reveal it on Monday, I wanted to find out what your guesses were. What do you think we're having?

Saving Money

Hubby and I are trying to put money aside for bub each week and I wanted a cute way of doing this, without having to open a new bank account or buy a piggy bank. My first thought was to find a used and washed jar at home. That search ended in failure, so my next (somewhat tackier) option was to find a used and washed chinese container - mission complete!

Now putting money into an old, used chinese container does not sound appealing, so I wanted to make the container fun and inviting for cash :). Solution - clip art and spray on adhesive. Here's the final product (the sides are also covered in the purple backing colour)....

Yes, this IS what I get up to when left alone in the office on a Friday afternoon (or all day for that matter).
